5/14/2007: Since Tommy arrived here, he had water and "gue" draining out of his left eye - sometimes more, sometimes less. At first we didn't think much of it, other horses had it before him and it always went away. I put him on Antibiotics, just in case it was an infection in his eye that wasn't obvious. It never stopped, so today I wanted to make sure we find out what's going on before sending him to a foster-home. Well, to make a long story short - the Vet discovered that Tommy doesn't have a complete tear-duct on the left, the duct doesn't come out in his nose. He has a normal, complete duct on the right, but no hole in his left nostril.... That means that all the tears he produces collect and eventually drain out of his eye, and the more tears he produces (wind and dust flying), the worse it gets - that's why it was never the same each day. The condition is called NASAL PUNCTA ATRESIA (no opening in the nasolacrimal duct, the part at the nostril). The Vet said she has never actually seen this before and wasn't sure if there is a surgery to correct it or not. If there is and she can do it, then we'll do it here ASAP. However, if there is a procedure that can be done, but she can't do it herself, then I might have to send him to a foster-home with a Vet or University who can do the procedure. Well, and if there is nothing at all that can be done, then I will need to find him a home with a humid climate and hopefully no wind/dust to keep the "crying eye" at a minimum. Then he'll probably need to get his eye wiped and checked every now and then, but would have to live with it....
